Increased Student Achievement
We believe that every child has the ability to learn and grow. Only 40% of 25-34 year-olds in Texas have a workforce certificate, two-year degree, or higher – far less than many other states and nations. To reach their fullest potential and enjoy a high quality of living, a student must be prepared for the challenges of the 21st century. With ever-increasing global competition, policymakers must raise expectations of learning for all young Texans. Accordingly, we believe postsecondary readiness should be the organizing principle of K-12 education.
Excellent Educators in Every Classroom
Nothing has more impact on a child’s academic performance than a high-quality teacher. Excellent teachers can advance a student’s learning at an accelerated pace and could overcome individual learning gaps. In order to increase the statewide ranks of excellent teachers, policymakers must adopt wide-ranging policies that: attract the best and brightest into the classroom, encourage educators to be data-driven and responsive to students’ diverse learning needs, offer personalized resources and support, and reward teachers for making a meaningful impact on student achievement.
Efficient & Innovative Districts
Differences among communities and the needs of students can be as expansive and diverse as Texas’ geography. While Texans should judiciously ensure every student is receiving a world-class education, policymakers should support high-quality, local decision-making and unleash the creativity of local communities. With over 1,200 school districts and public charters, the state offers a rich network where innovation and autonomy could lead to a more efficient and productive K-12 school system.
An Effective, Transparent, and Accountable P-16 Education System
The ability to measure, comprehend, and engage during a critical development in a child’s life is the most powerful tool available to parents, educators, communities, and policymakers. However, the right data must be captured, be easily understood, and be focused on dramatically increasing student achievement. Once set, the P-16 system can correctly respond to consequences and innovative approaches to raising the bar for all schools. Meaningful accountability is essential to building a world-class education system that provides every child the opportunity to achieve their full potential and contribute to a stronger Texas.
High-Quality Education Options for Families and Students
For many Texas families, the schools their children can attend are determined by imaginary lines. Policymakers should maintain high expectations for all students and hold every school responsible for results while empowering parents to select the best school model for their child. This fundamental shift would encourage an array of academic settings such as a particular program track within a school district, a system of unique schools, transfers within and between neighboring districts, and attending a free public charter school. To achieve this vibrant ecosystem, education dollars should follow the child and barriers that hinder access to high-quality school options should be lifted.
