Our Policy Priorities
Increased Student Achievement+-We believe that every child has the ability to learn and grow. Only 40.3% of 25-34 year olds achieved a workforce certificate, two-year degree, or higher – far less than many other states and nations. To reach their fullest potential and enjoy a high quality of living, students must be prepared for the challenges of the 21st century. With ever-increasing global competition, policymakers must raise expectations of learning for all young Texans. Accordingly, we believe postsecondary readiness should be the organizing principle of K-12 education.
Excellent Educators in Every Classroom+-No in-school factor has more impact on a child’s academic performance than a high-quality teacher. Excellent teachers can accelerate student learning and close individual learning gaps. In order to increase the statewide ranks of excellent teachers, policymakers must adopt wide-ranging policies that: attract the best and brightest into the classroom, encourage educators to be data-driven and responsive to students’ diverse learning needs, offer personalized professional development and support, and reward teachers for making a meaningful impact on student achievement.
Efficient and Innovative Districts+-Differences among communities and individual students’ needs can be as expansive and diverse as Texas’ geography. Texans should judiciously ensure every student is receiving a world-class education, support high-quality local decision-making, and unleash the creativity of local communities. With over 1,200 school districts and public charters, the state offers a rich network where innovation and autonomy can lead to a more efficient and productive K-12 school system.
Effective, Transparent, and Accountable P-16 Education System+-In order to best prepare students for postsecondary success, the right data must be captured, be easily understood, and be focused on dramatically increasing student achievement. Only then can the P-16 system correctly respond to consequences and innovative approaches to raising the bar for all students. Meaningful accountability is essential to building a world-class education system that provides every child the opportunity to achieve their full potential and contribute to a stronger Texas.
High-Quality Education Options for Families and Students+-For many Texas families, the schools their children can attend are determined by imaginary lines. Policymakers should maintain high expectations for all students and hold every school responsible for results, while empowering parents to select the best school model for their child. Lifting barriers that hinder access to high-quality school options will encourage an array of academic choices such as specific program tracks within a school district, transfers within and between neighboring districts, and free public charter schools.
